My grandfather – my mother’s father was a farmer,  working  hard on a small patch of ground in an little village in eastern Poland. I remember him as an exceptionally strict, curt and inapproachable person, with numerous problems, bearing a huge stigma of World War II.

I remember him as a person who loved the earth above all else – having an almost metaphysical contact with it – probably still not fully understandable to me. Every day, early in the morning, he would go out to the field, take a handful soil, that hecultivated and he rubbed it into his hands – when I remember him, this image always comes to my mind – this is how I remember my grandfather and his bond with the land / with the ground / with the terrain
